Muscovies

Picture
Muscovies are native to Mexico and South America, and unlike other duck breeds it did not originate from wild Mallards - they are their own species. The males are much larger than the females, and can reach 15 lbs, while females are only 8-10 lbs. They can be many colors - pied (black and white), chocolate, white, buff, or blue. They have red caruncles around their eyes, and a crest on their heads which they can raise or lower. They also fly quite well.  The ducks are good mothers, and the drakes are incredible meat birds - being less fatty than other duck breeds, making the breast meat very healthy and a taste comparable to steak!!
